Blueberry honey has antibacterial activity
Canadian researchers have recently shown that blueberry and buckwheat honeys have higher antibacterial activity than regular honey.
Katrina Brudzynski and Robert Lanningan of Brock University examined the antibacterial nature of honey against several strains of bacteria that have been found to infect wounds. The potency of honeys against the bacterial strains depended on flower from which the honey was obtained. The monofloral honeys, buckwheat and blueberry had the highest minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 6.25 % (v/v) to 12.5% (v/v). It seems likely that phytochemicals picked up from the plant are resulting in higher antibacterial activities than found with regular honey. This makes sense in many ways as blueberries are know to be high in anti-oxidants, chemicals which have antibacterial activity as well as being effective against cancer and heart disease.
